There are so many one-man bands these days, and a lot of them are just kind of generic, but this one actually manages to be different and stand out from the mass. Sxuperion (the guy and the band have the same name) play a rather murky variety of Black/Death metal that manages to sound primitive and kind of Sci-Fi at the same time. The riffing isn't really innovative in any way, but it gets the job done. The recording has a lot of dirt and echo in it, and here and there the music breaks up for atmospheric sounds, muttering voices, even some electronic sounds. Sometimes this kind of thing can be annoying, but here it successfully builds a kind of SF-horror vibe, and the atmosphere really adds to the proceedings. A strong album. |
