Skeletonwitch is one of those bands I've neglected over the years despite owning a few of their albums. These guys used to play some decent to great death/thrash but with this album they've gone toward a melodic death metal direction—the Gothenburg kind. For fans of the band, this will certainly be a shock at the album sounds a lot more "mellow" than their past output and they really put a lot of emphasis on the melodies, so this is not exactly hard-hitting stuff despite a few more rocking numbers. While the band has ventured in a genre that at one time got so saturated that people couldn't take any more of it, their approach is a little fresh, so at least it doesn't sound like a rehashing of the sound from 20-odd years ago when the genre was flooding the market. I'm not crazy about it myself, but it's certainly a fine album in the genre. |
