With eleven songs clocking in at less than 28 minutes, Texas' Skeleton sure don't mean to overstay their welcome. The band started life as some hardcore punk outfit and there's a bit of that left in this kind of blackened thrash fest infused with a hint of death metal. Don't let that turn you off. On their self-titled debut, Skeleton play it hard, heavy and fast and could go up against some of the best of them. The music here sounds pretty straightforward on the surface, but there are a lot of little nuances hidden in there that tend to reveal themselves with every listen, with raw and crunchy riffs aplenty and tortured raspy/screechy vocals that ooze pure evil. Skeleton go for the throat and punch you in the face with this one, but with an old-school catchiness and strangely upbeat, yet evil-sounding vibe that make you beg for more. |
