Well, this is fun. Awakening Force is one of those unpretentious albums that is deeply rooted in '80s old-school metal but does it with a modern approach without messing up the essence. Wanderer are all about heavy metal with a foot strongly set on the speed metal side of the fence. It's quite melodic and catchy but without sacrificing a gritty, raw and aggressive edge that gives it a lot of punch. I found the vocals to be a bit of an acquired taste. They won't wow you as this vocalist is about as unpretentious as the band's music and in the end his style is a good fit for the music. A lot of the guitar melodies here remind me of early-80s Maiden and so do some of the solos. That's where the comparison ends as Wanderer's songs mostly have a much darker vibe. I've been having a hard time staying away from this one ever since I got it. If you like dark old-school heavy metal that's also melodic and catchy, this is certainly worth checking out. |
