When I see the photo of Sign of Evil's lone band member and then see his stage name ("Witchfucker") followed by the six songs of brutally, perhaps intentionally, amateurish black/thrash/speed metal on Psychodelic Horror (and yes, "Psychodelic" is spelled with an "o"), there is only one band that springs to mind; Hellhammer. The vague devil/gargoyle character on the front, clearly inspired by the cover of Apocalyptic Raids, tops it off. All the songs are short slabs of evil delivered with the precision of a punk band and a ton of energy (I'll give Witchfucker that) for twelve solid minutes but, let's be honest, Hellhammer was not a good band. Influential for what they tried (and later realized with Celtic Frost) but not good, and Sign of Evil, whether by design or not, isn't good, either. Psychodelic Horror is a mess. |
