Druknroll are a Russian act that's been around since about 2006, but EP is my first exposure to them. They claim they're Melodic Death/Thrash, and I definitely hear elements of that, but this is closer to Prog in the complex arrangements and intricate musicianship. I'm normally not keen on this kind of thing, and this is not an exception to that rule in the slightest. Frankly, everything from the jerking rhythms to the disjointed songwriting reminds me of why I have that rule in the first place, and the modern grooving sheen that oozes from it certainly doesn't help with that. There are some cool riffs hidden in here, and the harsh vocals at least have some bite to them, but they're greatly overshadowed by the hyperactive Prog jerking and laughable clean vocals which try to sound rough and only succeed by the most negative definition. It's telling that despite being only 15 minutes, I still found myself getting irritated with it all and checking to see how much longer I have until it's over, only to find that I'm three minutes into the first song. Weak. |
