Screamer has been at this a while now and with their fourth album, Highway of Heroes, seems to have zeroed in on the perfect formula of catchy, melodic songwriting and metallic riffing and vocal lines. The album is full of the straight-ahead, uncomplicated metal I remember hearing from US bands in the early '80s prior to the commercialism of hair and glam taking hold. I think of albums like Malice's License to Kill and Dokken's Tooth and Nail, albums that you put on the car stereo, rolled down all the windows and cranked. Songs like the title track and "Towers of Babylon" stand out due to a little extra oomph in the choruses but truly there is not a single bad song on Highway of Heroes, so picking highlights is both impossible and unnecessary. If you love metal from before there were genres, music that just kicked ass while still being melodic and fun to sing along with, you need Highway of Heroes. |
