Dark Awakening is the fourth album from California's Shadowkiller and was originally released independently but is now getting a boost from Stormspell. The first thing that jumps out about Shadowkiller's music is the guitar work. Big, chunky riffs are the foundation on which each song is built and are interspersed with dreamier passages, dueling harmonies and smart solos. Iron Maiden is the clear influence throughout Dark Awakening, but you can also pick out Crimson Glory, Fates Warning and other US bands in Shadowkiller's epic compositions. Personally, I find the singing and even the vocal lines slightly grating. I don't know what it is, his voice is fine, but I don't feel like he meshes with the music very well. That, combined with the lack of a true standout song or two, factored into my score so your mileage will vary. Shadowkiller is definitely a band worth checking out. |
