Refreshing to have a band mining the vein of Egyptian myth and imagery who are actually from fucking Egypt. Scarab may never escape the Nile comparisons, despite the fact that they don't really sound like Nile, but are instead much more in the tradition of pummeling Death Metal of a more European school. Rather than the frenetic technicality and melody of Nile, Scarab sound a lot more like Behemoth to me, with the bludgeoning drum/guitar blasts and the much more direct songwriting. Vocals are a nicely guttural bellow, and while Scarab are not offering anything unique, they do what they do very well. |
