Scorn started out as a two-man project from the guitarist and drummer of Unbowed, but it's been whittled down to just Steven Rowlands doing everything himself on the debut. This is a slab of fairly technical Death/Thrash which sports some cool leads and impressive guitar playing overall, but it's not really enough to make up for the lack of engaging songwriting. The production also doesn't really have the bite needed to make this pop out, making everything sound oddly restrained when it should be roaring out of the speakers. With a better production job and stronger songwriting, this project could produce some pretty killer music. As is, I find it really difficult to remember much about this album even after several listens, which makes it hard to recommend all that highly. |
