The Pentagram is the fifth full-length from Brazilian blasphemers Apokalyptic Raids. The band name, if you didn't already know, comes from Hellhammer's classic EP from 1984 and it is yet another tribute to the seminal Swiss band's groundbreaking sound. Distorted guitars played with blinding speed, drums pounded with simple and swift brutality and proto-black/death vocals are the be all and end all of The Pentagram which actually shows a bit of songwriting growth from earlier efforts. Instead of blasting noise for half an hour like Hellhammer, Apokalyptic Raids have moved into early Celtic Frost territory with more fully formed songs like "Necromaniac (Is Back)", "Victory Beyond Imagination" and "Occult & Real". Think Frost songs like "Into the Crypts of Rays" and "Circle of the Tyrants". There are no surprises on The Pentagram, and you need to be in to Hellhammer/Celtic Frost, or at least that sound, to enjoy it but if that is the case, enjoy it you will. The best Apokalyptic Raids release so far.
