It's not often I come across a promo that makes me say, "Fuck yeah, that's how it's done!", but Mexican Black Metal duo Satan's Cross has managed to do just that with Celebration of the Fallen. It's no surprise they list the likes of Venom and Mercyful Fate as influences, as this is a solid exercise in First Wave Black Metal that revels in doomy, atonal riffs, Cronos-esque grunting, and lyrics all about Satan and evil. I wish I had more to say about it, and I certainly wish there was more of it, but there really isn't much to say about this kind of thing. You either have the chops to play like anything after The Return is for fucking posers or you don't, and these dudes absolutely pull it off. A small taste, but a very promising one. |
