Moon Chamber is a new collaboration between Crystal Viper vocalist Marta Gabriel and Rob Bendelow, founding guitarist of NWOBHM band Saracen. With that pedigree, you will not be surprised by their debut album, Lore of the Land. It is full of smooth, melodic metal that features more than a hint of hard rock. There are plenty of infectious riffs and vocal lines on highlights such as "De Temporum Ratione", "Ravenmaster" and "Crystal Wind". The astute listener will be able to pick out influences from Gabriel's own Crystal Viper to more accessible power metal like Unisonic to metal progenitors Deep Purple. There are also some fairly innocuous songs that are perfectly fine while on, but leave little to remember them by once they are over, so the album is rather hit or miss. Sitting somewhere between the hard rock of the early '80s UK scene and modern power metal, Lore of the Land is a well played but uneven record that should nevertheless please fans who can't get enough of Gabriel's fine voice or who like their metal from the hard rock end of the pool. |
