Another cool reissue from Vic Records, this time a 1996 demo by Dutch black/death maniacs Soulburn. I'd never heard of them before, but I like what I hear. The demo opens and ends with quiet, gloomy and war-ish intros and outros and, sandwiched in between is some blasting blackened death with raucous harsh vocals that aren't without reminding me of early black metal vocals (early '80s, that is) cranked up to 11—a good mix between two eras of the genre. Soulburn mix it all here—sheer heaviness is the constant, delivered at slow, medium and fast paces to keep things interesting. Those crunchy guitars and loud drums suck the listener in and don't let go, which makes the short length a bit of a bummer (but it is a demo, after all). Good stuff. |
