An interesting one-woman project, Vouna blends Doom atmosphere and some Black Metal sounds into a variation that draws almost equally on the Cascadian school and the new breed of smooth Doom with female singers. Sole band member Yianna Bekris has done some time in atmospheric and neofolk bands, and she brings that definite sensibility here. This has huge, sweeping riff structures that build mood more than heaviness, and recall classic Doom sounds like Skepticism or My Dying Bride. Bekris' vocals are mellow and low-pitched, sounding like a slow incantation, and they help to construct the arcane, gloomy vibe. I wish this album were longer, and I look forward to more. |
