Vulcain is one of those French bands that made it "big" way back in the '80s and left us with some really catchy, solid heavy metal. I thought I had all their albums but while writing this review I realized that I only have about half, all released in the '80s. Oops. Vinyle reminds me a lot of those albums from 30-odd years ago. It's all-around fun, hard-hitting, solid, catchy heavy metal that sticks in your head and can only be removed through brain surgery. Yes, "Vinyle" is indeed an ode to the vinyl format and, while it's kind of cocky, it's a hell of a lot of fun and a great opener. The album is mostly filled with similar quality material with great guitar work and vocal melodies that just beg for you to sing along (it probably helps if you speak French though...) "Décibels" is the odd one here, a power ballad that ranks up there with the best. Bottom line, while I can't compare this with their post-80s albums, I can say that this compares favourably with their early output, with better sound and more experience. Needless to say, it's hard to stop playing this one, and it just gets better with every listen. |
