This is probably the early (first Snake era) Voïvod album I hear people talk about the least, and the comments are usually negative. As you can already tell from the rating, I quite like it (I own three versions of it). It has some of the thrashing insanity of War and Pain cranked up to 11, being somewhat speedier, but it’s also more straightforward at times with some Motörhead and Venom-ish moments creeping up here and there. It has less of the post-apocalyptic atmosphere of the debut, but the brutality and speed make up for it. Snake’s vocals have improved but are still just as distinctively Snake. Voïvod have had a reputation for being weird since the beginning, and we can hear some of that all over the place on this album and the mix with more straightforward make all of it more digestible for the uninitiated. Say what you will but, along with War and Pain and Killing Technolgy, this is essential Voïvod. |
