Vaultwraith is a U.S. band going in for the first wave of black metal revival on their debut, Death is Proof of Satan's Power. Most bands stick with the thrashy punk of Venom or the proto-black/death of Celtic Frost, but Vaultwraith mix things up a bit. There's the speedy, Motörhead-influenced "Devilcraft" (my favorite track), the thrashy yet melodic "Ravaged in the Crimson Mist" and "Infernal Realms Unfold", slow, creepy, Frost-like "Dark Desires Unleash the Legions" and even some Mercyful Fate riffing on "Night Ride Through the Black Wood." The vocals are a combination of death growls and black rasping screams making Death is Proof of Satan's Power an album for dark, stormy nights spent plotting evil. Vaultwraith isn't truly my cup of tea (thanks, g-g-Grandma) but I give them style points for coming up with a varied album that doesn't follow the current black/thrash trend. |
