Sound Storm is a symphonic metal band out of Italy and rather than the intricate yet flowery dragons and sword-themed music that country is known for, the music on Vertigo, the band's third album, skews in a decidedly progressive direction. That isn't to say you won't hear high-pitched singing, airy keyboards and guitar solos that don't shy away from the frets close to the pickups, because you will. What separates Vertigo from the ocean of symphonic releases is the songwriting. I can't say it is amazing, but the occasional nods to Pagan's Mind and even Rush are unmistakable and expertly woven into the songs. I haven't heard their previous albums, so I can't say if this is a progression but based on Vertigo, fans of progressive/power metal will want to cast their gaze in the direction of Sound Storm.
