I've been following Connecticut's Autumns Eyes for several years now and was happy to see some new music in the form of Ending Life Slowly, the band's eight full-length album. Comprised solely of multi-instrumentalist Dan Mitchell, Autumns Eyes has been morphing over the years from a melodic Death Metal act to one more firmly rooted in Gothic Metal. Autumns Eyes was inspired by Halloween, horror movies and the cold, dark atmosphere of the fall season in New England but has grown well beyond those initials touch points. Mitchell's vocals are mostly a clear bass, a la Type O Negative's Peter Steele, with occasional Death screams and I think the former suits the current direction well. The lyrics deal with inner struggles and loss and the deep voice employed by Mitchell gives them a true sense of gravity. There is still a lot of melody on tracks like "Death of October", "Couldn't Hang On" and "Far Away from Fading." Mitchell's major-chord guitar riffs counter the gloomier keyboards like a ray of hope in an otherwise mournful atmosphere. I feel like that theme runs below the surface of Ending Life Slowly; there is hope even when things seem hopeless. If you liked the band's previous efforts, Please Deceive Me and Broken Leaves and Haunted Streets, or if you are a fan of Type O Negative and bands like Voyager, Ending Life Slowly is one you'll want to check out.
