It's an increasing phenomenon to hear female-fronted Metal bands both in lighter and softer forms as well as more extreme and heavier forms of Metal music.
Russia's Pokerface represents the latter category; they play fast Thrash Metal with the half-growled and half-screamed vocals of vocalist Alexandra "Owl" Orlova. In the growling department, she sounds totally terrific, like a raging beast crawling out of your worst fuckin' nightmares. Her screaming vocal parts contain a good dose of Punk attitude, which earns a couple of extra horns-up in my book of admiration.
Musically, Pokerface churns out very American (now who said Bay Area?) flavored Thrash Metal that has many killer and intense riffs and hooks that scream to be liked with a bit of modern Death/Thrash that might get them associated with bands like Arch Enemy or the Dutch riff patrol Legion of the Damned. There are many things to be liked about this band; they obviously know their stuff very well and have the desire to show off their influences within their kickass Thrash Metal delivery. To top it off, top-notch production supports these Russian thrashers in their tour de force of wild energy and untamed intensity. In other words, you would be a fool not to check them out.
As a side note, Pokerface have toured/played shows with bands such as Sepultura (opening for them on the band's Russian mini-tour in spring 2015), Children of Bodom, Kreator, Overkill, Megadeth, etc., so I guess that should speak strongly about the band's steadily growing popularity and reputation in their home country.
Now, may the headbanging commence.
