Pennsylvania's sleaze rockers On Top are back with a new EP titled Top Dollar and after giving their debut album 2.5/5 you may wonder why I'm reviewing this one at all. First, sometimes I like a little Hard Rock/Heavy Metal that doesn't take itself too seriously and second, On Top have addressed some of the shortcomings of the debut and are actually a better band this time around. The lyrics are still about getting laid (another scantily clad woman on the cover makes that plain) but aren't as puerile as before. Singer Jaron Gulino still sounds like Zack de la Rocha from Rage Against the Machine but now he's actually in tune and new guitarist Rick Haas is the real deal. He brings a great tone to the songs and knows his way around the fretboard, creating some exciting leads. At the end of the day, if you aren't a fan of 80s Hard Rock/Heavy Metal like early Motley Crue and W.A.S.P., then On Top aren't going to do anything for you. If you are, however, On Top is a band that obviously worked at improving and is worth a listen. |
