Normally I would love an album like Waves of Steel. Mandragora play a galloping style of heavy metal that has Iron Maiden printed all over it, mixed with hints of fast, catchy power metal. Yes, we've heard that before, but still. Musically this is not particularly original but nonetheless very cool. The problem is the vocals. The singer... It's hard to say if she's horrible or simply tries too much. We're all used to high-pitched vocals in the genre, but she is just screeching the whole time and it's cacophonous, and I really mean that in a bad way. After several listens, I still can't stand those vocals and, to make matters worse, they often bury otherwise good music. Too bad, for this could have been a really good album. |
