I thought Fireforce's March On album was a well-done collage of Power Metal influences and after missing the next one (Deathbringer), I was happy to get Annihilate the Evil in my review queue. Rather than run through the varieties of Power Metal, this time Fireforce stay with a crunchy, Power/Thrash sound throughout Annihilate the Evil. The guitar sound is excellent as are some of the leads and the riffs aren't bad though there's nothing you haven't already heard. The vocals and the lyrics are where Annihilate the Evil can't hold a candle to March On. Singer Flype is still gritty but he's affected a slightly different inflection and he sounds whiny, a fact made even more of a distraction when combined with some of the truly awful lyrics. On "Dog Soldiers" he sings "dog soldiers, trembling with fear, dog soldiers, hungry and cold." Deep. Or how about "Fake Hero" – "we're moving to the lines, avoid the enemy." Seems obvious. I don't like to slag bands that sing in English when it isn't their native language but man, the lyrics are just so dull and boring. And I don't know whose idea it was to cover The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" but Fireforce absolutely butchers it. Painful. Fireforce sound a bit like Helstar or Flotsam and Jetsam this time around but not enough to make seeking out Annihilate the Evil worth the time. |
