This is a good mix of fast and slow, gloomy black metal that marries the raw style of the early to mid-90s with the more epic, melodic, cleaner style that would become popular (in relative terms) a few years later. While the album has an epic vibe, it's still relatively short with average-length songs, so Ofermod don't overdo it in that department, instead sticking to filler-free songs that pack some punch without respite and, first thing you know, the album is already over. I'll take that over an obsession with filling the CD with crap – better short and entertaining than long and boring. The vocal style is relatively clean and understandable enough given proper attention from the listener. It's also a great match for the epic, gloomy vibe of the album. It's not exactly catchy music but it's nonetheless quite memorable. I often found myself humming to it days after having listened to it. I'm certainly looking forward to hearing more from Ofermod. |
