Germany's Orden Ogan has been one of the more dependable Power Metal bands of the last few years. Their albums are never short of infectious choruses and silky-smooth melodies brought to life by a balanced attack of crunchy guitars and majestic keyboards. Album #6, Gunmen, is no exception and anyone who enjoyed prior efforts like Easton Hope, To the End and the superlative Ravenhead will be pleased. Front man Sebastian Levermann's just-gritty-enough vocals bring to life tracks like "Vampire in Ghost Town" and "Ashen Rain" with the rest of the band surrounding him with a veritable wall of Power Metal sound. The nearly 9-minute long closer "Finis Coronat Opus" features some assorted styles, from anthemic to epic, stitched together seamlessly in an impressive display of songwriting. Where Gunmen drops back from Ravenhead, the band's high-water mark to this point, is the use of multi-tracking and chorus effects on Levermann's vocals. It's actually a cool effect but Orden Ogan use it on almost every track and it rapidly loses its appeal only a few songs into the album. It seems like a small detail but it really takes away from the listening experience and so, while I like the album a lot, it has this annoying quality muddying the water. All in all, Gunmen is another quality release from Orden Ogan, just not their best.
