What music do you listen to that isn't metal?
« on: June 06, 2017, 11:01:49 am »
This is an easy question. Feel free to post as much or as little as you like. I've listed some of my favorite bands and albums.

Diamanda Galás
Queen (especially 1970s)
Rush (especially 1970s)
Joy Division
Cocteau Twins
The Cure (early goth rock era)
Swans
Cream
Comus (mainly First Utterance)
Dead Can Dance
My Bloody Valentine
Elend
The Chameleons (original era)
Portishead
Björk
Christian Death (original Rozz Williams era)
Death in June
Coil
Biosphere
Depeche Mode
Nick Drake
Exuma
David Bowie
Slowdive
A Tribe Called Quest

I'd be here all day if I wanted to expand this any further, because I own a ton of CDs that are decidedly not metal.

Loosely by genre. Progressive rock, hard rock, alt rock, (eighties) pop, AOR, goth rock, and synthwave. Although the vast majority of my listening is dominated by heavy metal because I'm one dimensional and don't know how to have fun.  :headbang:

Where to start...

Baroque/Classical - Mozart, Bach, Telemann, Haydn, etc.
Bluegrass - anything that's fast  :headbang:
Rock - too many to list but Rush and The Beatles top the list
New Wave - simply because it was on when I was in school and it's more of a nostalgia thing than really liking the songs all that much

すぎやま こういち(Koichi Sugiyama), who is mainly known as the composer for Dragon Quest, probably should have been included in my original post based on the fact that I've spent thousands of hours listening to his music in the games and also the Symphonic Suite versions of the game soundtracks.

Atmospheric stuff like Paleowolf, 80s retro electronic music like Futurecop, Anvil Strykez and Astral Stereo Project.  I listen to medieval/world music like Arcana, The Moon and the Nightspirit, and Irfan.

Love me some Moon and the Nightspirit, used to listen to alot of ambient folk music of that sort. You should check out the group Rome if you like that sort of martial/medieval ambient style music.

Now and days for non metal I mainly listen to synthwave, as im a sucker for the 80's nostalgia.  Some of it even has killer metal undertones and vibes such as stuff like this from Dance with the Dead.

Yeah I also listen to a ton of retro electronic music. Futurecop is awesome. Lately I've been listening to John Carpenter's two Lost Themes albums a lot as I go to sleep.

In addition to that, tons and tons of classic rock. Never been able to get into punk beyond The Clash.

I listen to a lot of 80's Hard Rock when I'm not listening to strictly metal.  Other than that, I have a weird smattering of bands I like ranging from Gordon Lightfoot to Monster Magnet.  I also listen to a shit load of Rush, particularly their run from Signals to Hold Your Fire, which I consider their best.
Metal Always. Metal Only.

Hold Your Fire is the best.  That's actually the first album I bought on CD.

Hold Your Fire is good (I saw them on that tour) but Moving Pictures is the best.

Slow, Deep and Hard from Type O is pretty fucking Metal. "Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelity" is an awesome song  :super:
