Wow. Rock magazines sucked even more then than they do now. Least every single issue of Metal Hammer these days comments on how Maiden are the best band ever. Slayer are usually mentioned on every page at least.

I got into metal in 1997 and it was just as hard to find info then. I did the time honoured thing of checking out bands in thanks lists of albums I liked. I accidentally discovered power metal in 2001 when I bought some CDs by Helloween, who had been described in Classic Rock as speed metal, which made me think they were thrash. Best discovery ever.  :D

That's like me picking up Walls of Jericho on vinyl even though I usually only bought cassettes just because the cover was cool. That might be MY best blind purchase (after Piece of Mind, of course  :lol)
