Title: Upcoming Albums
Post by: Mjölnir on December 01, 2013, 04:51:35 PM
To save confusion and space, this thread is for any albums you are looking forward to, regardless of the year (we all have Sirliftsalot to thank for the idea ). Battleroar, Pyramaze, and Behemoth all have upcoming albums that I'm eager to hear. How about the rest of you?

So far for what 2014 has to offer I am looking forward mostly to the new Woods of Desolation and Vektor albums.

The new Woods of Desolation song was incredible and Vektor are more than likely to unleash another masterpiece on us.

Can't wait for the new Battleroar with Gerrit!

New Dark Forest (UK) album too,

Also hear rumblings that Brazil's DragonHeart is working on a new album also.

New Dark Forest (UK) album too,
I hope it's much better than their last.  I really liked their debut, but their most recent was poppy and annoying.

New album from Alcest due to land January 17th next year which should be nice.

New albums from Agalloch and Gallowbraid are supposed to be happening also.

Well, considering how awful the single is and how the band stated they were trying to get away from a metal sound, it probably won't be as nice as you would like.

Ah that's a shame, I'll still have a curiosity listen when it comes out regardless.

I never quite got the hype about Alcest, I checked their album out from a couple of years back that everyone was pitching a tent over, thought it was a load of shite.

Not all that much I'm excited about for 2014 as of yet, I've already heard the new Persuader. I guess I'll be keen to hear the new Primal Fear (although the single was dull), and new Anubis Gate should be good whenever it drops.

I did have a slight glimmer of hope for the new Stormwarrior, but their latest track doesn't do much to fan the flames. Where's the fast, guys!?

I thought that song was pretty cool in places, I hope there are some fast songs on the album as well though.

Well Grand Magus has a new one coming out early in 2014. They posted a song on youtube on the 9th and it kicks ass.  I'd prefer the fatter bass sound from Iron Will, but this is still awesome.  Here is the title song Triumph and Power;

As far as I know they are not active right now.  They are not broken up, and they still sell merch and keep their albums in print, but there's been no word on new material for a long time.

FoI wasnt that weak in my opinion, just took a lot more listens to sink in.  Of course it wasnt as good as Vast Oceans but I doubt anything they ever do will be, I still very much look forward to any new material from them!

I really liked Fear of Infinity and would only rank Vast Oceans Lachrymose slightly above it.  I'm clearly in the minority though.  That's great news that they have a new album coming out this year.

Yeah, there's definitely that classic Iron Savior vibe going on. There are some Savage Circus style moments too which add a new dimension to the band, I prefer it to the last one as well. The first five or six songs are ridiculously good, but to be honest, they hardly let up throughout.

I still love The Landing, though.  :p

compared to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sy-a5JJa0RM, the new singer lacks presence, her eyes have no fury

Arch Enemy announced a new singer in Agonist frontwoman Alissa White-Gluz, along with a new album to be called War Eternal. Here's the video for the title track:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InRMwptcgAo&feature=youtu.be (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InRMwptcgAo&feature=youtu.be)

Well, Alissa's hotter than Angela, though she doesn't have her stage presence.  Maybe she'll grow into that.  I don't think she sounds any worse, as Angela was always overrated as a vocalist.  Live she carried things with her energy, but in the studio she always sounded flat.  Musically this is the best stuff I've heard from AE in a decade.

No, she's in no way hotter than Angela, maybe a bit more melodic in her approach but that's about the only good thing I can muster in regard to her vocals with Arch Enemy or otherwise.

Well, we can't talk about her old band because they sucked beyond all other means of sucking.  Horrible.

Dude she is waaay hotter then angela lol, Ive seem AE live before and Angela looked all cracked out and shit... not attractive in any way really.

Musically, this is better than anything since Wages Of Sin. The vocals aren't offensive in any way. And I think she is hotter than Angela. Not like that matters.

Reviewing bad albums gets old fast, considering you have to listen at least a few times.  Rarely is an album so awful that one or two listens is fair.  Still, I'm glad Sargon reviewed those Divina Enema albums and not me  :lol

That does sound good, but so did a lot of the individual songs on the last album.  The problem was every song sounded the same so the album as a whole was boring.  Let's hope this next one gets back to the level of the debut.

On another note, Visigoth, from Salt Lake City, signed with Metal Blade for their debut album they are recording right now  :super:

New While Heaven Wept album should be immense as long as it holds up to how they have been marketing the material on the release to press / fans.

You owe it to yourself to check out some of Threshold's Mac-era albums. Subsurface is absolutely stunning. Such a sublime prog metal album.

Really hoping WHW has been worth the wait. Then again, I grew to love Fear Of Infinity.

Yeah, that Victorius tune sounds pretty cool, bit of a change from what was on the last album. Singer sounds quite a bit like Martin Steene here.

Hmmm, I'm on the fence with this song. I'm not particularly fond of the harsh vocals utilized, it feels really ham-handed and obvious. I like the prog-rock type stuff weaved throughout, and I think the last few minutes sound pretty great.
Title: Re: Upcoming Albums

The track dosent go anywhere. That clean section seems to go on forever and overall it has a very disjointed feel.
Title: Re: Upcoming Albums
Post by: Mjölnir on September 12, 2014, 10:58:40 AM
Yeah, it's pretty unfocused, plus Rain sounds kind of bored.  I guess there's always the off chance that it works better in context with the rest of the song, but it appears more likely that it will be indulgent and more like 6-7 songs mashed together instead of a genuine 40 minute epic, which is a fact that makes me weep.

That new Primordial track is fantastic. I can't wait for the full album. Redemption... somehow didn't grab me nearly as much as the two albums before it. This track can stand shoulder to shoulder with The Golden Spiral or Empire Falls though.

Blut aus Nord also uploaded a track from their upcoming album to their Soundcloud ( http://www.metalstorm.net/events/news_comments.php?news_id=24565 ). It's amazing. The industrial/urban sound of the 777 trilogy is gone and instead it's a really epic brand of Black Metal. They finally got a real drummer too and it shows big time.

Ran across this earlier, looks like Urban Breed's got a new project brewing to release a new record in January...

"Published on Jul 18, 2014
A rising star shines bright on the metal sky, a band, that is about to take the masses by storm: SERIOUS BLACK!

The members, some of whom are long-standing veterans in the scene, such as Roland Grapow (Guitar/Masterplan, Ex-Helloween) and Thomen Stauch (Drums/Savage Circus, Ex-Blind Guardian) bring a lot of experience to the table. Mario Lochert (Bass/Emergency Gate), Jan Vacik (Keyboards, Ex-Dreamscape) and Dominik Sebastian (Guitar/Edenbridge) are no rookies to the metal scene either. Together with their sixth member, Urban breed (Vocals/Ex-Tad Morose), these musical masterminds conjoin their diverse musical backgrounds to create a powerful piece of melodic metal.

Metal fans can now expect an album in a class of its own, along with an abundance of live shows on the upcoming Hammerfall tour and various festivals already confirmed for 2015.

The Serious Black does sound a little generic, but how can you deny Trail of Murder!!  Breed sounds utterly spellbinding on that album and I wish they would have just wrote a few more albums instead of him branching out to other things.

Yeah, yeah. I'll start listening to Serious Black today and see if the charm is lying around here somewhere...

Edit: this is some really good melodic/power metal. Sounds a lot like Masterplan, no doubt due to Grapow.

I completely agree.  I almost never listen to Mysterium and Playground of the Damned.  You could argue that they are "good" albums, but they are really weak when compared to albums like Gates of Fire or Open the Gates.  My expectations for the new album aren't too high, but I'll be picking it up regardless.

Yeah, I think everyone expected them to really go thermonuclear.  They had riffs, they had songs, they had a first rate singer.  The performances were there.  They had everything they needed to be an amazing band, and then they just. . . didn't.

You wound me, sir. Never would I talk shit about Mark's acoustic guitar. The Fountain from Mysterium is one of my favorite MR tracks. I was just concerned that the first track they released was acoustic and I was a bit concerned that they might be taking a more laid back approach to this album. The electric guitars then quelled my fears.

If only because it doesn't sound like a cluster-fuck of disparate ideas, yes, it sounds better. As I said in my review, the vocal lines sound like they were written for someone with much less talent than Floor and I was expecting/hoping for a little more of the bombast of old. If it matches Dark Passion Play then I guess I will have little to complain about.

New Nightwish sounds pretty gay to me, here's something much better.

New Drudkh song, from their next album due out April 20th.

http://www.nocleansinging.com/2015/02/24/an-ncs-premiere-drudkh-till-foreign-ground-shall-cover-our-eyes/?mc_cid=41a7cc0635&mc_eid=131dd7f8cf

Dude, knock it off.  Some people like Nightwish, some people like Drudkh, some people like both.  In no universe does this mean you have to be a dick about it.

In the middle ground for Nightwish. Heard that main riff a whole bunch of times from them, although the vocals and mid-section is sweet. Certainly stronger than anything from the last two albums.

New Kamelot song:

https://youtu.be/JEch2Zdq7b0

Sounds quite a bit like "Sacrimony", but it's nice to hear them touching upon the "Epica" sound again.
Title: Re: Upcoming Albums
Post by: BrunoRedSox on April 02, 2015, 10:08:19 AM
I get kinda sad everytime I hear a new Kamelot tune. Being a huge fan of the old works (Eternity, Dominion, Siege Perilous, Fourth Legacy) makes me think that Youngblood became sort of a gold digger, with a thirst for commercial music. That doesn't suit my taste.

With that being said, even if this is not the Kamelot that earned a place in my heart until The Black Halo in 2005 (last "real", honest Kamelot album, in my opinion), it's a good song.
Title: Re: Upcoming Albums
Post by: RichardRG on April 02, 2015, 11:11:05 PM
Veil of Elysium sounds too similar to Sacrimony and less good (and I didn't like Sacrimony that much, although I was more impressed when Sacrimony came out than with Veil of Elysium). The song gives me more of a Silverthorn or Poetry for the Poisoned vibe rather than The Fourth Legacy or The Black Halo as Youngblood described the new album to have in an interview. It's not the worst song ever by Kamelot (that title might go to Song for Jolee) but it's underwhelming and turned down my excitement for the new album. But if Veil of Elysium is an accurate indicator of how good the album will be, then it will make Ghost Opera seem like a 5-star classic album in comparison (which was largely received as a step down from The Black Halo, Epica, Karma, and The Fourth Legacy). I will still listen to Haven once I receive it in the mail and look forward to seeing Kamelot live whenever the opportunity presents itself, but if Haven is anything like Silverthorn with its overproduced, commercial sound that could belong to a Disney movie soundtrack, then it won't remain in my car CD player for long and I'll return to listening primarily to their golden-era albums - The Black Halo, Epica, Karma, and The Fourth Legacy - and occasionally Ghost Opera and Poetry for the Poisoned, and remember my favorite band for what they once were and continue to be a fanboy regardless. A lot of us Kamelot fans have already been going through this for years as it is.

It's interesting that BrunoRedSox mentioned Youngblood as having a thirst for commercial music because I often think that Silverthorn's sound quality and story line itself sound like it could come straight out of a Disney movie.
Title: Re: Upcoming Albums

"Silverthorn" was much closer to being a real Kamelot album than the two that came before it.

Listened to Haven a couple of times now and I like it. It is definitely not on the same level as The Black Halo but what is? I forget who said it but Youngblood's guitar is too far back in the mix and that is what gives it a "commercial" sound, I think. I miss Khan but the current guy does an admirable job and his voice fits the music enough so that you don't feel like it is a completely separate band.

And not that his voice isn't up to it, he just doesn't have Khan's charisma, or his ear for vocal hooks.  Of course, I mean Khan in his prime.  His taste in melody had decayed a lot since the golden days.  So while this is not on a par with Kamelot's best, it is probably a better album than they would have managed with Khan still around.

I, too, have high hopes but the last few albums have been waaaay too long for quality of the material so 92 minutes seems excessive. I have my fingers crossed there are enough good ideas to stretch over an hour and a half.

Not exactly a new track, but Metal Church has released a 2015 version of "Badlands" as a teaser for their new album, which should come out this Fall. Mike Howe sounds good, altough not great. Check it out:

Title: Re: Upcoming Albums
Post by: Chris Foley on June 22, 2015, 05:23:39 PM
Yeah, I think Mike Howe definitely still has it, but one does not simply re-record "Badlands". "The vultures that circle" part in original untouchable, but he did a pretty good job here, just a little attitude lacking.

Still, this is good enough to warrant some hype for a new album, I thought the last one was good, so with Mike back in tow, I don't think they can go far wrong.
Title: Re: Upcoming Albums
Post by: Sargon the Terrible on June 22, 2015, 10:10:43 PM
Amazing, Mike still has chops after all this time.  He sounds as good as he ever did.  The things I don't like as well about this version have to do with the mix, not the performances.

So, Chris Broderick and Shawn Drover's new band "Act of Defiance" released a video for the song "Throwback", which will feature in their upcoming album "Birth and the Burial".

That Sinbreed sounds decent, bar the vocals.

Krypts are currently working on their second full length. I have hopes for this one.

Sounds decent but i really hope the album overall is more like Death & Legacy.

It is, though not nearly as good.  It's a big step up from War of Ages.

Post by: MetalMike on January 19, 2016, 07:43:03 AM
The new Serenity is definitely better than the last and more in the vein of Death & Legacy but the band was in the zone on that one and everything came together. I don't know if they'll ever equal it. I really enjoyed the new one, though, so a good pickup for Symphonic/Power fans.
Title: Re: Upcoming Albums
Post by: Dan Alderson on January 19, 2016, 07:43:35 PM
I am a fan of Serenity, but the only one I really know well is Fallen Sanctuary which I think is fucking awesome. That tune seems like a solid enough "single" song for marketing and promo use for the label. But the band and vocalist sound a lot more reigned in than on their earlier stuff. I actually didn't think their last one was that bad iirc.

New Artillery is tight, feels like they're trying to channel "Khomaniac" in the intro. Savage stuff, should be a solid disc.

Not big on Holy Grail, that first EP was ace, but ever since it's like everything modern Hibria could/should have been marred by Avenged Sevenfold/contemporary rock/metal vocal lines and choruses. Lead guitars are legit killer, though.

An album from Sumerlands is finally coming, absolutely loved the demo, and I'd like to bet this is going to be a good one. Roll on September, between this and Eternal Champion it's going to be a HM Autumn.

Check out an updated version of "The Guardian" from the demo here, a little slower and more atmospheric, without sacrificing any power. Mike, Sargon, keep an ear out.

The saddest part are the comments. One particular guy said that there is no "new generation" in metal. I'm guessing he knows about three "metal" bands overall. Metallica should be left for those who don't know shit about Heavy Metal. Leave what's good for us, these punks don't know any better
Title: Re: Upcoming Albums

Exactly. Okay, they "put" metal on the map in the 80's. We can't deny Kill, Ride and Master doesn't exist, but we can't also deny that Load, Reload, St-Anger and all the other crap they did (napster thing) doesn't exist either. They are over 1000 bands better than them. So just because they release a "thrash" song of 3 minutes with repetive riffs and a solo of 15 secondes that they are back to the glory days. I've seen reactions on youtube of people CRYING over that song and saying Metallica is BACK. lol

Im kinda in the same boat, but ill admit i did kinda like a couple songs... I think it was hetfields vocals that never did it for more cause some of their songwriting in the 80's stuff was decent.

Never liked them either. It's different for me though because I was born in 1988, so by the time I started to understand music Metallica had already turned into this shit.

I don't think it's cool to hate Metallica. Just kinda normal by this point. Can't deny they were important to me during my early teens, and I was born in 86.
Title: Re: Upcoming Albums
Post by: MetalMike on August 25, 2016, 02:44:02 PM
It's easy to hate Metallica these days considering how far off the rails they've gone musically and how big a pair of DBs Hetfield and Ulrich turned out to be but I'm telling you, in 1984, after Kill 'Em All was out and Ride the Lightning was just being released there was nothing like them on the scene. Sure, Venom and some other bands were around but the average fan couldn't find it reliably. Metallica was faster and heavier than almost anything you could reasonably get your hands on. After Burton died wheels came off so anyone that became aware of them after 87-88 was getting them on the decline and by then a million other bands has passed them in terms of speed, heaviness, etc.

I'm sure there were plenty of people that didn't like them at their peak and that's fine but they were extremely important to Heavy Metal both back then and what we have today.

Rant over.

Exaclty, they don't even know what metal is anymore. I remember their MTV tribute or something like that, and they (the band) were doing a standing ovation to Snoop Dogg, Avril Lavigne and other crap artist of that time that were in the top 10.

I'm pretty done with new Metallica, but definitely gotta comment on Testament and say that yes, I think they are sounding pretty good right now!  I actually was never much of a fan of Testament, but I may have to go back and listen to their albums more because I'm actually getting a bit excited for their new album. I'm so used to the older acts getting weaker and weaker, but this one sounds pretty great. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

I really liked it.  It's more aggressive than Hellenic Warrior Spirit, but a little less epic sounding.  I was skeptical of the samurai theme, but it works really well.  I still find Still At War to be my favorite of their three albums.  I'm really looking forward to hearing their new one.

Dutch thrashers Distillator have a new album coming up titled "Summoning the Malicious", on May 1st 2017. At least those two couple of example songs sound pretty darn promising to my ears (see them attached below).

Black Death Resurrected

Quote
Currently recording their 3rd Full-Length album, "Breaking the Chains of Hell", comprised of both new material and a lot of classic Black Death material, including "Breaking the Chains of Hell" from the 1983 demo, the 13-minute "Sin After Sin" (of which a 1983 live recording was released on "Until We Rock: The Early Recordings of Black Death" in 2017 but has never been recorded in the studio before) and several songs from the planned 1987 album "The Black Assassin" and 1988 the album-length demo (recorded but never released) "The Tank Shop Manuevers", which was Vinny Lindsays first studio recording with Black Death. In 1988 much of "The Black Assassin" material was combined with then-newer material to make up the 12-track "Tank Shop Manuevers", and now material from both periods is being recorded in the studio again to be released for the first time.

Yeah, that cover art is lame. So is the unimaginative stretch of tracks titled "Black", "Blacker", "Blackest". Kind of dropped off with Horizons, and it's a shame as they've went from one of my ultimate, most anticipated bands, to "oh, cool, new Anubis Gate coming out, might give it a listen".

First single from the new Arch Enemy dropped.

Better then anything they have done in a while, and I attribute some of that to having Loomis now.  They need to ditch the "We have a hot chick who can growl" schtick though and get someone with some more power behind their vocals... even Gossow was more visceral which helped the music alot more then the vocals do here.

New song from the upcoming Nocturnal Rites album, Phoenix. This is awful, it looks like we have another The 8th Sin on our hands...

According to thier facebook Therion will finally after years drop a real proper new album. It will be called "Beloved Antichrist" and is a 3 hour long concept album. It will feature 29 vocalists and a ton of otherthings that will apparantly change symphonic metal again, the way they did in the 90s... Thats a bold statement but im looking forward to it!!

It drops in January!!

Gothic Kabbalah is a good album, and fans of Therion's recent works will enjoy it, but it could easily have been cut down from a good 85-minute album to a really excellent 50-minute album. More is not always better, and this album would be much stronger if somebody had tightened it up a little. Another impressive album from Therion, but if nobody reins in next time, we'll soon be staring down the barrel of a 3-disc album, and that kind of scares me.
