Same here, reading Gunslinger next.

I read that years ago I've just finished PS. I loved the first hundred pages or so, but then thought it dragged a lot until the end, which was definitely one of King's best. The prose was sublime, as always.  icon_cool

Sublime?  Oh please, King is a mediocre stylist on a good day.

Thought I'd jump in on the King train and say I am currently halfway through IT.

Fyodor Dostoevsky - Crime and Punishment

Never really had an opportunity to read many "classic" books before, now that I'm in an university I hope I'll read more.

You won't, unless you're an English major - the workload kills.

The Children of Men. Fantastically gripping so far, if very bleak and pessimistic. But that's part of the beauty.

I'm sorry, but you're wrong. While there are stylistic problems with his novels, his prose is among the best in modern fiction. Particularly in books such as It and Misery. It just depends on what you like. If you dislike his style, you won't see the majesty in it.

I'm Larry would agree with me on this point.

Majesty, piffle.  Try him against a genuine stylist like Dunsany, Tanith Lee, E. R. Eddison, or Clark Ashton Smith, and you will find him gimmicky and trite.  That's not even talking about heavyweight prose artists like Melville or Hawthorne.

I find King incredibly entertaining at best. Don't know about 'majestic'...I mean I'm not saying I don't like him, but still.
