Take Shelter
Lord Of War
Kalifornia

First one is very good, the others reasonably entertaining.

Because everyone turned in spectacular performances, the plot was made actually conceivable, the ending and virus subplot was a pretty clever way to explain the simultaneous rise of the apes/fall of man, and Andy Serkis gave another performance to cement himself as the only actor that ever needs to be put in a mocap suit.

I don't get any of that. What attracted me to the original Planet of the Apes was the fact that it wasn't what this movie was purporting; some kind of plague virus thing and what not. I liked the way the original just made it seem like man had driven themselves into a hole through nuclear war and their own self-destruction, lowering themselves to a point where even apes could take them over (as opposed to this movie's rather generic virus subplot...). The humans all seemed stupid as hell and I really just didn't buy some of the terrible decisions they made. The whole thing seemed way too easy and rushed, and I couldn't really get invested in it. Some parts were entertaining but mostly I just found it silly.

I haven't seen the original in a while, but yeah this is pretty much all I got out of it. Aside from wanting to murder James Franco's character in every scene he was in...

But that's the point of the virus subplot. He makes this incredible wonder drug, but human bodies need it stronger. He makes it stronger, but the company, after seeing what his drug can do, begins ignoring his advice on safety protocol.

Eh, still, not the same thing. It's a decent enough explanation I guess but part of the weirdness and wonder of the original was just the fact that we didn't know where these apes came from or how they exactly took over. To that end I guess this movie never could have saved that facet of it. But I just didn't think it was very good either way.
