Great album, but did not progress as much between albums as Isa did from Below the Lights.

Indeed, in fact I thought
Ruun
was very much a continuation of
Isa
as far as sound as well as aesthetics are concerned. Typical to say this of any band's latest album, but I think it is probably the weakest album as of yet. Still great nevertheless. Enslaved are amazing because they manage to keep progressing with each release and have always done their own thing, unlike many of their Norwegian peers. One of the only good remaining bands from the old Norwegian "scene", and a favourite of mine.
PS: Is anyone else planning to go to the Enslaved show that is soon to come? Unfortunately, Dark Funeral is headlining the fucking thing, and its also an Inertia event, however I can't pass up an Enslaved concert.

I'm planning on going to it, but that's all the way in January, so I'll worry about it when the time comes.

I haven't heard Isa (or the new one) yet, but have heard and own everything up to and including Below the Lights. How are those two albums compared to the rest of their catalogue in terms of style?

Isa
seems to be more "tight" sounding with some slightly different clean vocals than were used before, and just generally a lot more "prog" riffs. Its hard to describe, all that can really be said is that its quite different from
Below the Lights
, although I still hear remnants of
Monumension
and Pink Floyd in there. Again,
Ruun
is very much like
Isa
in terms of sound.

What would you guys say is the best Enslaved album, or the one that best represents Enslaved's sound. I have Isa and Blodhemn, but I want to hear more of this band.

Eld (even if just for 793). Although the two albums before it (Vikingligr Veldi especially) are quite great too.

Hordanes Land and Blodhemn are my two favorite Enslaved releases. Frost is also pretty awesome

Now now... Ares was just trying to be tr00.
Personally I'm more into the later stuff, maybe because I started with that.

No, I'm not trying to be to tr00 LOL. Later Enslaved just doesn't do anything for me. I've listened to plenty of tracks off Blodhemn, Ild, and Below The Lights and found them to be mediocre. I don't think Enslaved have gotten the credit they deserve for their first 2 albums(Vikingligr.. and Frost) and have received far too much credit for their later releases. But hey, that's just my opinion and opinions are like assholes, right?

Just pulling your leg.
That "I don't like post-Frost Enslaved" comment was very common in the tr00er-than-thou crowd a while back.
