Krone.at: Can you tell me some things about the new album you're working on?

Kirk Hammett: I think it's the best album we've put out in, say, fifteen years.

Krone.at: Oh, but that rules out quite a lot of work you've done in the past!

Kirk Hammett: Yeah, it's our eleventh studio album, but it feels like our sixth. It's just a really spectacular range of songs. This time we're not afraid to refer to our past music in order to create future music. People will see that we've kind of embraced our old vocabulary again and are using that vocabulary to express new things. I'm super excited to make this album, finish it and release it — 'cause then we can go out and play it to the people. We might have stretched our cores a little too much in the last fifteen years, but we've always came back to what we originally are and have been. I think with this album we're definitely going a little more back into our roots.

Krone.at: Does this mean, you're heading from "St. Anger" as a start further into, let's say, the raw meat!?

Kirk Hammett: Yeah, it's super raw! There are some songs on that album that are so fast, that James and I kinda look at each other and go, "Ouch! Our wrist are gonna fall off." There are a lot of really, really fast songs, a whole lot of really heavy stuff. We changed our approach to writing the songs, all of us were working on the material this time. We also changed our tuning. With "St. Anger" we had the guitars really low. This time, we tuned the guitars back up to what they originally were for the first five albums. Because we've done that, James' voice sounds more like it did in the '80s than it did in the '90s. There's a lot of changes that we've made, but I believe that they are all for the better.

Krone.at: Was there a need to go back to the roots and avoid melodies and slow stuff because of the rise of bands like 30 SECONDS TO MARS, for example, or some other emo, nu metal, whatever you may call it band?

Kirk Hammett: Yeah, you know. I don't really understand what emo, the description means…"

I've heard these type of comments before. But the way I see it, it cannot possibly get any worse than St. Anger.

I agree, but we will have to wait to see if it's going to be as similiar to 80s Metallica as he is trying to make it sound like.

Hey the new Paradise Lost sounds like a 1994 demo (mostly anyway).... so there's hope for everyone.

The way I see it, there was the same hype concerning St. Anger's sound before they released it, so I just don't believe that bullshit.  Oh, if it does include at least a solo on a song, then it will be definitely not as bad as St. Anger.  Now, if they just replace that crappy (and annoying as well) sound from Lar$' snare drum, that would also be an improvement

4th Horseman, is the new Paradise Lost album really worth it?

Depends what you are looking for really. I like it. It would fit nicely in between Icon and Draconian Times. A few songs sound like they are leftovers from Shades of God so it definitely is something I like. But there's no Doom/Death here if that's what you are looking for. Clean vocals all the way thru.

I don't think they have the fire or anger that they had back in the day to create that style again. I honestly believe they did not sit down and wrote the weak ass crap they have written since "Justice" with a set goal in mind on what sound to go for. Unfortunately I think it was simply a representation of their fame. Kind of hard to stay pissed at the entire world when you are a husband, father and most importantly a multi multi millionaire. So for them to regain the aggression they had when they started I honestly don't see it happening.

They always look to their 'peers' for new ideas.  In 2003, their peers were The White Stripes and The Strokes.  This time around it's Ektomorf, Red Chord, and Atreyu. "Core" it will be one way or another.

Its still pretty bad, but I feel safe saying it's a little better than St. Anger. It's very boring to say the least and James' vocals are poop.

Even a metalcore style album is say Shadows Fall style would be heaps better then St. Anger. I do not see any way it could be possible for them to suck more then that album. Wait....I do actually....RAP METAL!
