David Lee Roth is widely considered one of the best front men ever. Last time I checked some of the biggest metal bands in the world had very up front and easily identified front men...Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford, Ronnie James Dio, Ozzy Osbourne.

Out of all the members in a band the one person that really has to be confident is the lead singer as he is face of the band and the one interacting most with a crowd. If you have a front man that is scared shitless in front of a audience you are in a world of trouble.

there is a LOT of gray area between self important/pompous and sacred shitless... why can't they just simply be confident?

Well someone being self important/pompous and someone simply being confident is really a matter of perception. I didn't view his statement as being self important while others did. More than a few people could argue that any of the other lead singers I mentioned are also self important/pompous while there will be plenty of people that would argue against it.

Scared shitless was a rather extreme statement what I really meant is those lead singers that have little or no stage presence at all. Standing on stage and basically doing the album note for note makes for a very boring show. I have only had the chance to see Iced Earth with Barlow one time but I thought he did a great job.

I don't think Barlow is pompous and all. I think he means well and genuinely wants to do good for society. He just doesn't seem very bright.

His powers of influence and change were far greater as an IE vocalist than anything else he could do.
