What did you listen to before you got into metal?
« on: March 30, 2007, 01:56:23 PM »

I know a lot of people suffered through mallcore and other stuff before they got into real metal -- myself, I was a fan of Linkin Park for a while. I'm curious -- what did you all listen to before you got into the good stuff?

Weird pop music and folk, metalcore was not even existing when my ears started to care about music, ah the good ol' days... icon_smile

My earliest music tastes consisted of Iron Maiden, DragonForce, Black Sabbath, and some grungey rock type stuff, plus Killswitch Engage, Children of Bodom, and Lamb of God.

Now this is REALLY going to show my age....

the very first album I bought with my own money I was 9 years old and it was the troo ultra kvlt double album of the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack. I know what you guys are thinking...."can you burn me a copy?" alas sadly I have no idea where that album went (probably somewhere along with my KC and Sunshine Band, Bay City Rollers and Chic albums). Fortunately a little over 2 years later I think is when I bought Blackout from the Scorpions and Back in Black from AC/DC and it has been metal ever since.

Fake metal (shit... the same kind of stuff that I rip on people for liking now) and any kind of mainstream rock that was on the radio. Examples: Korn, Disturbed, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Rage Against the Machine... bands like that, you know. I've only been into real metal for a few years.

Well, I was never really into music until around 1988 (when I would've been either 8 or 9 - can't remember to be exact, but I remember it was shortly after ...And Justice for All came out). My brother (who was an troo 80's thrasher) used to listen to his vinyl Iron Maiden, Slayer and Metallica albums, which used to piss me off whilst I was trying to play with my Transformers or read my Fighting Fantasy gamebooks. Many a time I was forced to turn up the volume on my Amstrad CPC 464 whilst playing 'Manic Miner' to try to out blast squealing solos with blippy tweety videogame music.

Anyhow, one day I actually decided to investigate further after he explained the lyrics to Metallica's "One" (whoa - a dude that has all his limbs blown off, is deaf, dumb and blind but still alive. Coooool), got lost in the album artwork and lyrics and have been hooked ever since. So, without sounding like a bragging twat, musically I've only ever been into metal  headbang

Its funny how many of us (the younger at least) have probably ( and seemingly) been introduced to metal by their older brother who grew up in the 80's.  I too got started off with Manowar, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Motorhead from my faithful older brother.   We ALWAYS played GI Joes to those bands, and the music became a soundtrack for my youth.... He still listens to metal, but has drifted more towards the still accessible bands, and power metal genre's now that he's an "Old Man".  Where as I'm enjoying the more obscure sides to metal.  We don't really have too many "bands" in common anymore.

Though like everyone, I made some brief pitstops along the way.  Rage Against the Machine mostly during Junior High...even still like them occasionally   peep .  I'm still a big Trance fan, however.  Not sure how that developed, but I still listen to  Trance every so often.  And later, in Highschool, my best friend got really into his "music indentity" and listens to all the early metal/rock stuff like Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin, Deep Purple, and eventually into more and more obscure Jazz, Folk, and stuff prevelant in the 70's.  This was, of course, all his rock music was another big influence on me.  So overall, I guess I haven't ever strayed too far from Metal.   ylsuper

Speaking of older brothers, my story ain't much different either.

My older brother was too cool in my eyes and therefore I used to follow him around and generally was a real pest. One time, his friends were over and listening to Metallica's Kill 'em All. They were trying to play the first solo of the track "The Four Horsemen" using an old acoustic guitar that one of them had. Can't remember if they managed to do it, but what I do know is that took my brother's cassette and made a copy of that album. I was floored by the music (9 years old at the time) and the rest is history. To this day, that's one of my favourite albums, and same goes for the mentioned solo.

I don't think I listened to music all that much before. Again, at 9 years old, music wasn't a big thing for you. A few Bon Jovi songs, Europe and probably some U2, but I can't say for sure.

I listened to a lot of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Bush, and Alice In Chains back in the early 90s.  I still like Pearl Jam, Sound Garden, and Alice In Chains.  Then I listened to some Korn, Disturbed, and dare I say, Slipknot.  *gasp* I hadn't been exposed to real metal yet and that was the heaviest thing I knew (I was never a Slipknot kid and did not look like any of those types.)  Then I heard Raining Blood and my eyes were opened and I got rid of all my old CDs to get new ones.

As a toddler, around 2 I got into Guns 'n Roses. My dad being a big Maiden fan I would listen to his Maiden vinyls. However I stopped listening to music up until year 3, so when I was around 9, turning 10 I listened to shitty nu-metal. Limp Bizkit, Korn....etc. Then in year 4 got into Metallica, but 90s Metallica. The up until year 8 I listened to nothing, then I discovered real Metal due to some forum I was on, the guy listed some metal bands and I checked 'em out. Children of Bodom and Blind Guardian, these day's I can't listen to CoB, but I still love the Guardian.

I also got into metal from hearing my older brothers' records back in the 1970's- Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Alice Cooper, Rush- it basically took off from there. My oldest brother was sadly murdered when I was 12 and my other brother never followed the progression into real metal- me and a cousin in North Carolina are the only members of my family that have really gotten into metal. Before I was a confirmed headbanger I listened to what our local AM radio station played(That was all I had in my room until Christmas 1979) and the local FM rock station, certainly after getting an AM/FM radio,  and a lot of New Wave.

George Wassoof godfather of arabic music and mawwal.

the fucker was a drug addict arab mafia leader, literally...he was not to be messed with. I met him once, he was drunk.

George Wassoof was the only person i liked from the arab music scene...other than him i used to listen to classical music, chopin, rachmaninoff, liszt, brahms, vivaldi, albinoni and so on. oh backstreet boys and nsync  laugh

i got into metal when my cousin once played his Iron Maiden Killes tape, it was love at first sight...then he got out some Motorhead and Black Sabbath, and that was it..i officially got into metal..that was 11 years ago i think...the first band i discovered by myself was Anathema, and the album was Pentecost III...that was the start of me becoming a doomster. I enjoy all metal, but doom is still my number 1.

I hope I have this 'big brother effect' on my two younger brothers. I'm pretty sure my one brother was digging Amon Amarth when I had it in the car, recently.  ylsuper
