Heavy metal soothes bright teens Wed Mar 21, 6:17 AM ET
Teenagers who lock themselves in their bedrooms to blast out heavy metal music may simply be trying to cope with the pressures of being gifted, according to British research reported Wednesday.
The study said that teenagers often work off the stresses and strains of being a bright outsider by listening to bands such as System Of A Down, Slipknot and Tool.
Researchers questioned more than 1,000 members of the National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth, whose members rank among the brightest five percent of youngsters in Britain.
"There is a perception of gifted and talented students as being into classical music and spending a lot of time reading.
"I think that is an inaccurate stereotype," Stuart Cadwallader, a University of Warwick psychologist who is presenting the findings to the British Psychological Society Wednesday, told the Daily Telegraph.
"We are looking at a group with lower than average self-esteem that does not feel quite as well adjusted.
"They feel more stressed out and turn to heavy metal as a way of relieving that stress."
Cadwallader added that heavy metal fans often appreciate the "complex and sometimes political themes" of the music.
"It has a tendency to worry adults a bit but I think it's just a cathartic thing," he said.
"It does not indicate problems."
Many of heavy metal's biggest stars are closet geeks -- Brian May, guitarist with Queen, is currently finishing a doctorate in astrophysics, while Iron Maiden star Bruce Dickinson is a history graduate, international fencer and qualified commercial pilot.

Who cares about Brian May this is what I was pissed about when I saw this a few days ago:

Those are mainstream bands, with faggy mainstream fans. Outsiders do not listen to those bands, generally, confused teens do, BEFORE they find metal. Of course, those bands' listeners also include a legion of shit sampling corpse molesters.

Well that's all well and good, but 'Heavy Metal' and 'Soothes' do not belong in the same sentence.
From the example of music they've given, it's more like 'Limp wristed Nu-metal' helps black nail varnish wearing kiddies 'Hate their parents more'

Funny how my eyes blocked those bands. I had to read it twice, even after you pointed it out to me. Perhaps I need a coffee to

I've seen this article posted on 3 different boards.
I mean, I understand where they're coming from - But I've YET to meet an intelligent youngster who likes Slipknot and Dragonforce.

Dragonforce.
Fuck you. Dragonforce glory holes you with such intensity that you'll find yourself praying instead for Alexander the great to again ravage your gold and virgins.

Dragonforce are EXCELLENT musicians and AWFUL composers - they're technical prowess is undeniable but the songs are just boring and beyond repetitive - they just go in circles and are even similar to each other.

It's funny how three years ago all of us on this board came to an agreement that Slipknot was becoming a 'real' metal band in view of the 'masterpiece' that Vol. 3 was. I remember one respectable reviewer calling it a "progressive thrash album". You know who you are. A trip down the memory lane anyone? Anyone? I personally think it was an okay effort.
So yeah, I wouldn't rule out the possibility that there's an intelligent youngster out there that likes both Slipknot and Dragonforce. Me? I prefer the former to the latter.

After learning how unscientific the "theory" of Global Warming is, and considering how much of a political and media fiasco the whole issue has become, to the point that legitimate scientists who actively state the totaly lack of scientific basis for the whole idea become ostracized vehemently, I no longer have any appreciation for these ludicrous socialogocal or scientific "discoveries" that journalists make up in order to tell a story that people will find intriguing, and discuss endlessly with one another. "Oh, Bruce Dickinson is well smart, that means kids who listen to heavy metal must also be"...please, give me a fucking break. Go to a metal show here in Toronto and ask yourself if these are breeding grounds of gifted, highly stimulating and intellectually disposed individuals and you will quickly see that the grand majority of these people are borderline retarded.
Pink Razor, while there may be some intelligent people who listen to metal, it, like all social groups, has its fair share of retards.

This board?... Progressive thrash album?... An okay effort?... Slipknot?
This message board must have had different members back then. I just couldn't see any of the people here having a conversation like that.

Honestly, I don't recall any mention of Slipknot here at all. I even disliked Slipknot when I was 11, no joke. Progressive Thrash?
Huh?
