IL-2 Sturmovik PC game
« on: January 26, 2007, 07:35:12 PM »

Anyone play this? They recently came out with yet another expansion "1946" that includes all these crazy experimental planes. With real physics, cockpits, and almost total realism in regards to the detail involved in the planes, this is by far the best simulation I've ever played. It's not just a sim, it's pure joy to fly these planes.

We should get a metalcrypt server going, I'll be glad to help people get it up and running. It has fairly average system requirements, but it DOES require a joystick. You can't play it without one.

Well, my PC most likely can't play it.  After all I built it about 4.5 years ago, so it's unlikely that the video card can take recent games.  I have a joystick somewhere, I can't remember if I have the connector on this PC however (I've used it on my previous PC only.)

The IL-2, that's a cool plane.

The guy that designed this game, Oleg Maddox, is Russian or something, really obsessed with bringing Russian aircraft history to life in a simulation. All kinds of aircraft not seen in almost any other program/game, like the LA-7, YAK-9, MIG9,  IL-10, and many more. To play the game at smooth speeds with reasonable settings you need at least:

1.5-1.7 ghz processor
512mb minimum ram, 1gb is much better. 256 is super choppy.
video card with at least 64mb ram (geforce3 or above, geforce4MX does not work with this game but I've played it with a geforce3 and it works just fine albeit a little choppy)

The game is highly scalable, you can crank the graphics way way down to make it smooth, but at its best its a beautiful, smooth, realistic-as-hell joyride of flight simulation glory. I don't normally gush about this stuff and am NOT a flight sim junkie, but this game... god damn. God damn.

Too bad, looks like a cool game.
