Celtic/Vking/Folk metal recommendations
« on: November 30, 2006, 02:49:31 PM »

Well - as a person I say quite well-versed in heavy, thrash and death metal I recently started to explore folk/celtic/viking metal....and I must say I love it...

I know some of you guys listen to this stuff extensively - so shoot some worthy bands at me...

They can be black metal-based - as long as the black metal element is not predominant - like say Primordial (totally awesome band BTW "The Garthering Wilderness" rules)...and if it is underground stuff than even better...

I already know some basics like say:

Elvenking
Skyclad
Primordial
Ensiferum
Tyr
Falconer (the first three and the last count - if you know bands like this also please tell me - I love this type of stuff)
Mael Mordha
Bathory (Viking era)
Cruachan
Mitothyn
Tuatha Da Dannan
Ensiferum
Morrigan
Forefather
Waylander
Korpiklaani

So basicly all types of viking/folk/celtic stuff...

Ensiferum
...
Ensiferum

You mentioned twice to show how good they are...     Grin

If you liked Ensiferum you should check Wintersun.
Try listening to Thyrfing, too.

I heard Thyrfing is very on the black metal side of things and not on the folk side - but I did not hear them so I gotta ask - is it true?

Also what Wintersun sounds like? More of less Ensiferum?

Also I gotta be like having a brain melt or something for not mentioning Falkenbach as I was listening to Heralding - The Fireblade today....

Suidakra, but you probably already knew about them...

And I wouldn't say Thyrfing is black metal, more death but still very melodic and quite much folk over it

Wintersun is the Enfiserum's guy with a better production and more complex songs but less soul. If you like Ensiferum you will probably like them.

Errr... Perhaps Amon Amarth. Give them a listen.

And Manowar is going to do something with the name 'Odin' in it...    laugh

Fintroll
Obtest
late Ancient Rites
Manegarm
Gjallarhorn
Moonsorrow (even if they are abit extreme but hey, Mitothyn are not "easy" either)

The already mentioned Falkenbach and Skyforger are my favourites

Two of the best bands right there.  And yeah, get Moonsorrow's "Kivenkentaja".

Aes Dana are excellent, as are Belenos.

Gonna look into all you guys mentioned - but I truly prefer bands that sing in English - I like to know the lyrics to the songs - but Skyforger and Negura Bunget are a exception of course!

Yeah.  Lil' John is in there too with such classics as "Odin is the Motherfucking shit, motherfucker roll up in the club ass bitch WHAT!"

Seriously, I hear Geasa is an alright band in this vein.  But arent the 42345 bands you already mentioned enough to satisfy your craving?

Never can have too much good metal...

Also what do you guys think of Mayhemic Truth/Morrigan? Worth investing time/money into it?
