Iced Earth Remixes
« on: January 22, 2012, 05:10:28 PM »

I had bought Iced Earth - Night of the Stormrider and Burnt Offerings both back in 2002, when they had just released the remixed/remastered versions of these albums. I love them both, and consider them to be the absolute BEST of IE. But then recently, I have looked into the recent loudness wars that's been going on. And I have found out that a lot of remasters are a joke (some but NOT all). Since these are remixes too, are they better than the originals, and are they too compressed, or did Jim Morris do a good job avoiding compression? Since I have never heard the originals, I was just curious to know what you guys think.

I never heard the originals of NOTS and BO. I had the first one and remember the song Iced Earth, in the middle, you could really hear the bass galloping and not in the remixes :S

I owned the originals before the remasters and still prefer them. They have more depth.

Better sound, better art, better package. Why exactly were they even re-issued?

I'm pretty sure the fact that you could recognize them from each other fairly easier before the re-issues had something to do with it...

And what about the Blind Guardian remasters? Is the original better than the remasters of Tales, Somewhere, and Imaginations?

I actually enjoy the Blind Guardian remasters. I am not sure at all, but I'm not sure if Jon Schaffer even approved the IE remasters by Century Media. I know he never wanted the Alive in Athens DVD to be released, not to mention that career-spanning Slave to the Dark collection.

I'm not really keen on bands re-working old songs.Dimmu's Stormblast comes to mind and Arch Enemy recently remade songs from the Johan Liiva era. Also, those Iced Earth releases are some of the very releases that got me into the metal underground years ago.I think it takes away from the excitement and passion from when the originals were recorded.

Well, I am probally one of the VERY FEW people who prefer the re-recording of Stormblast to the original! I like the down tuned guitars, the ripped off material left out, and the two extra songs. I also feel that Dimmu Borgir is one of the VERY few black metal bands who came across much better with a good, clean production. they just have too much symphonic stuff going on to have a raw production. I also downloaded the original Iced earth albums, Stormrider and Burnt, and compared them to the remixes I own, and oddley enough, I prefer the remixes! I think the artwork and the new sound goes better with the Iced Earth we all know and love (at least me).
