R.I.P. Megaupload

Copied from the Braveboard:
Federal prosecutors in Virginia say they have shut down one of the world’s largest Internet file-sharing sites, Megaupload.com, and charged its founder and others with violating piracy laws.
An indictment accuses the company of costing copyright holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated films and other content. The indictment was unsealed Thursday, one day after Web sites shut down in protest of two Congressional proposals intended to thwart the online piracy of copyrighted movies and TV programs.
Megaupload.com has claimed it is diligent in responding to complaints about pirated material.
The indictment says that at one point, Megaupload was the 13th most popular Web site in the world.

So they killed Megaupload, that leaves about 1600 other filesharing services.

Shutting down file sharing is pointless. Napster, Kazaa, Megaupload. Something else will just come along. If people want to steal music and movies they will do it with another site. I feel bad for the site creators having to go to court based on user content. It doesn't really seem fair when they at least attempt to protect copyrights.

About the only time I download from those services is when a band or label uses them to distribute their promos, but whether Megaupload went downhill (not in my experience) or not, it was better than most of the alternatives, especially the Russia-based ones which have been getting a bit more popular.

They took the bait.
Here's my crappy theory: The blackout was an awesome, clean and peaceful protest. That's bad for SOPA/PIPA. What so you do when your adversaries are doing well? You make them angry. How do you do that? You take away from them something that they want. So they brought down Megaupload, and they got their expected attacks. Now I feel that opposition against SOPA/PIPA has been somehow harmed by these attacks.

Let's see. Download a few songs or a movie and get nailed to the wall. Steal a few billion from your investors or the general public and walk scot free.
I'm sure there'll be another site just like it going online by next week. What the government's doing is like the Dutch boy who stuck his finger in the dyke only to see water gush out elsewhere.
