Everything that Sargon said is true. I had some young "metalheads" in my carpentry class that thought Lamb Of God, Korn, Bullet For My Valentine and Avenged Sevenfold were metal. I checked all of their Ipod, and none of them had Maiden, Black Sabbath, Metallica (only one and he had St-Anger), Judas Priest or any real metal. Kids nowadays don't like to find an hidden band or read reviews.

They just take what's on the radio

But some of them do move on the quality music; Take my cousins. A few years ago they were into Limp Bizkit, Korn etc, but as they grew up (they are in their early twenties now), one moved on to pagan metal and is now into Forefather, Amon Amarth  Ensiferum and other viking/battle themed stuff - the other moved more in a hardrock direction and are into AC/DC, Ozzy, Slash and that kind of stuff.

What I'm trying to say, is some will get it, some will not.  Why worry about it?

Very true, it's because they had an older cousin :P

People who think teenagers are dumb and can't 'understand' good music are being pretty stupid themselves.

I have to agree. But then again, I'm 17, so I might be slightly biased.  laugh

That was exactly like me years ago. Used to think Nirvana were the tits until I heard Iron Maiden. The whole fun of getting into metal for me was the constant exploration on new bands and genres I never new existed. I will never ever forget the very first day I heard Bathory, opened me to a whole new world of music.

I think it is a waste of time to say you are intellectually superior to another person just because you listen to a certain genre of music. I am guessing that was the point you were making?

Very right, sir. Kids can't appreciate good music/books/people/whatever. Then they grow up, are exposed to better things and they eventually learn. The fucking circle of life.

Reading over this thread only helps to confirm a suspicion that I've had about metal.  You see, I've only been into metal for about 5 and a half years but I've been slowly assembling my own opinions about metal's history and sub-genres (with much help from Sargon's Metal Genres page there on the left Grin ).  One of the things that I keep running into is that metal, as a whole, is a very 80s music genre.

Now before you jump down my throat, lemme explain.  I'm not saying that Judas Priest and Iron Maiden are the same as Alphaville and Devo.  What I am arguing is that ALL of the sub-genres of metal either began in the 80s (Thrash, Death, Power, Progressive, Early Black, Doom) or have roots with the 80s styles (Groove Thrash, Symphonic ANY-thing, Black, Gothic, Folk, Gothenburg).  Any of these fusion genres (Nu Metal, Metalcore, etc) have a heavier 90s influence because that's when they formed.

In essence, those of us who have a more strict definition of what is heavy metal are really just clinging to a time period when metal was more popular, more pure, and full of diversification.  While I'll expect you to refute my claims, it's something to consider.  To be honest, I'm okay with it.  My definition of Classic Rock is hard rock from 69-82, revolving around Led Zepplin, AC/DC, BTO, Boston, Styx, and Journey.  Then again, maybe all of this is kind of silly because I was BORN in 1984 and wasn't even aware of different music styles until I was in middle school (late 90s).  Basically, I'm retrospectively imposing definitions upon eras of music history for which I really wasn't around.   icon_redface
