Yeah they're just going to split it over two movies and pad it out with some stuff from the Appendices, for which they do have the rights. I just hope they seize the opportunity to flesh out the characters a bit more than in the book, where most of the dwarfs are little more than luggage.

Getting into death and black metal

If this movie doesn't become one of the top grossing movies of all time, and if it doesn't win 3 or 4 Academy Awards, I'll lose faith in humanity.

Can you imagine what the metal musicians whose band names, and lyrical themes, are based on the Lord of the Rings and Tolkein's other works?

It puzzles me why people care how much money a movie makes or how many stupid Oscars it wins. The masses are known to watch completely retarded shit half the time and the Academy Awards are a political joke.

I have no idea what you're trying to say.  It's like you didn't finish your question...

Of course I'm a LOTR fan.  Battlelore and Summoning all the way icon_wink

Agreed.  But if is makes a lot of dough for the backers, surely that will mean that the more fantasy films will be produced. Which is a good thing IMO.

Perhaps, but recent attempts to start franchises like "Eragon", "The Golden Compass" and "Percy Jackson" have all failed, so... Thank God for "Game Of Thrones" then.

I deeply love the A Song of Ice and Fire series, and I do enjoy the Game of Thrones show, but that HBO feel it has annoys the fuck out of me. All the sex scenes they put in there for no reason pesters me endlessly. It's like HBO has a contract clause when they get a new show off the ground that stipulates that there must be several sex scenes that don't really do anything in the way of furthering the plot. The book had a decent amount to keep watchers satisfied, I think, but there was no need to have it happen almost every damn episode. That HBO element really gets in the way and doesn't capture the real feel of the books at all, in my opinion.

Still, I watch the damn thing.

Maybe they wanted to compete with Spartacus in the sex scene department.  If so, they lost horribly.

Yeah the sex in "Game Of Thrones" is overdone (choice quote: "Play with her arse." - Littlefinger) and it fits way better in a show like "Spartacus", which was sordid from the beginning. I love both, though. "GoT" even invented a whore character that is not in the books but in ALL of the unnecessary sex scenes.

Both movies are just over The Hobbit. The Hobbit, while smaller than the LOTR books, still has a lot of stuff going on in it, particularly a long chain of unfortunate happenings that befall on Bilbo and the dwarves. Telling the whole story would probably end up in a long and bloated movie.

Whenever I think about a Hobbit movie, I think of the (in)famous 1977 film by Rankin and Bass.   It's been quite a while since I've seen it, but I remember it being a pretty good adaptation.  Glancing over the Wikipedia page notes that they did change a few things, but I also see a run-time of 77 minutes.  Getting in all the details and doing it in LOTR's style would probably place it at 2 to 2 1/2 hours.  I'd really hate to find out if Peter Jackson felt like it needed to be three hours, or even worse, six (across two movies).  As excited as I am for it this December, I'm also kind of apprehensive.  The ending of Return of the King was bloated enough (and it could have been worse!).

As for Game of Thrones, I haven't up on that yet.  Shameful, I know.
