I don't know if you guys are LOTR fans, but I can not wait for this movie. Here's the link for the trailer just in case you haven't seen it already. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0k3kHtyoqc

Saw the trailer when it first came out, that dwarven chanting sent shivers up my spine. It's also cool to see nearly everything being indicative of a lighter tone of story, the characters and settings are brighter, and of course, that scenery porn.

So what I heard is that there are going to be two Hobbit movies, with the first being based off of the novel, and the second one will be based off of the Silmarillion and other Tolkien works.  Does anyone know if this is true or not?

Yeah, they're expanding the book with side stories from the expanded mythos, i.e. when Gandalf leave in the middle to conduct "business in the east" the film show what he did there (white council and all that).

You can see Gandalf travelling to what I presume is Dol Guldur in the trailer.

Can't wait for it, and since it's Peter Jackson helming it, of course it's going to be good

The fact that they're filming it in 3D worries me slightly. I won't see it in 3D, but I hope they don't load it with schlockey nonsense to accommodate the 3D version.

Hopefully 3D will just go away entirely.

I have no problems with 3D done right, especially not with a movie that looks to make jaws drop from the sheer beauty of its sets and scenery like this one. It works best in the hands of a competent film-maker trying to immerse an audience in a completely different world.

True, but it mostly tends to be used in a gimmicky way with shit flying at the camera. If they actually take the Avatar approach and use it only to enhance scenery, I would be fine with it. I'll still probably see it in 2D first if I have the choice, though.

That perfectly describes Martin Scorsese's "Hugo", where the 3D perfectly enhances the fantastic set decoration. Strong story too, so it blows "Avatar" away on all counts. So far the only movie worth seeing in 3D, because "Avatar" wasn't really worth seeing in any dimension.

I didn't see that in 3D, but I can only imagine how it would've looked. In hindsight, that was probably a missed opportunity. However, I did see Tintin in 3D, and that was just great. Added a whole new dimension to the frenetic sets and chases, gave everything so much more depth.

I was under the impression that Peter Jackson and company only had the rights to The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, none of the other books, so I've been getting the impression that they're going to tell the Hobbit across two movies.  As much as this makes my skin crawl, don't be surprised if Bilbo gets the ring and then they slam a "To Be Continued Dec 2013" at you.

Both movies are just over The Hobbit. The Hobbit, while smaller than the LOTR books, still has a lot of stuff going on in it, particularly a long chain of unfortunate happenings that befall on Bilbo and the dwarves. Telling the whole story would probably end up in a long and bloated movie.
