Getting into death and black metal

Opeth
« on: January 07, 2012, 11:02:35 PM »

What would you call Opeth?  Their music seems to flirt with both death metal and progressive rock, most notably on their song Deliverance, where you have both elements, but then again with bands like Burzum, just because he released a couple of dark ambient album you don't call him a dark ambient musician.

I mean he hates them with all his being, and will likely lock this thread. Just sayin'.

You might get an encouraging word from Foley, though.

I will never understand why Opeth gets so much hype, maybe I didn't listen to the good stuff but what I heard always puts me to sleep.

Why does he hate them?

Because they are a horrible band?  Is that reason enough?

"Opeth" often sounds like someone with a lisp saying "Opiss".

Opeth suck!! They are the most self indulgent and boring ass bunch of fucks in the metal community, in fact after that last shitfest (Heritage), I hesitate to call them metal, I vote their metal card be pulled and there be no more Opeth reviews posted on this site.

Hell yeah, I'm certainly an Opeth fan. I suppose in answer to the topic, if the band really need pigeonholed then straight up progressive metal will do the trick. There earlier albums are probably the most interesting but Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Damnation & Ghost Reveries are all quite accomplished releases.

I really liked Blackwater Park, then picked up the previous albums and they didn't clicked.  I never bothered checking anything else they did after that one.

Well, I got Heritage, and I thought it was pretty good. Not very metal, more prog rock, but I liked it.

Yeah, not very metal at all. With every release they stray farther and farther from their roots.I used to really enjoy them but now they don't even pique my interest.
