You're leaving out Live in Leipzig?  Blasphemy.

I think it is well established that despite my advanced years, I am a relative n00b when it comes to Black Metal  laugh
I'll have to look into downloading ("MetalMikeing" as Michel would say) Live in Leipzig from iTunes or Amazon with some of my Christmas dough (now THAT is blasphemous! naughty:

And I added the caveat "to name a few."  Personally, I thought you were going to crucify my for having Megadeth on there!

Oh, and

Well, any list like this is going to be silly.  It's impossible to name a definitive list of bands.  Some people will start with foundation bands like Sabbath or Priest, which is kind of like telling someone to start reading by giving them Piers Plowman and The Iliad - sure they were influental, but has the genre produced nothing superior over time?  Hardly.  Any list like this is going to amount to personal taste, nothing else, so I don't see a point.

This, but I think it's kind of cool to see where people's thoughts on influence, individual quality, or simply personal favorites can take their lists.

The first 3 Arch Enemy albums were pretty important to me as well as Barlow-era Iced Earth.
I'd also like to add Metallica-...And Justice For All.

Absolutely true, but there are also albums that transcend personal taste.  I don't particularly care for Death, for instance, but they have albums that are universally held in high regard.  There are bands/albums that people may not like, yet most would never disparage.

Maybe the topic would be more appropriately titled "Metal you should hear at least once in your life."

In any case, these lists are also made for simple harmless fun (unless of course some people take them too seriously, then the fun is over). You don't really need to have a point for that  icon_razz

Manowar - s/t  (There's something really geniune and raw that makes this one stand out as a great album.  Manowar has great songs later on, but this is one that I can easily call a great album.)
Sword (Canada!) - Metalized
Equilibrium - Sagas
HammerFall - Legacy of Kings  (If you're going to listen to one, it's this one.)
Stratovarius - Episode, Visions (I can't decide between the two, really.)
Metal Church - s/t
Amberian Dawn - River of Tuoni (For some reason, this one blew my mind!)
PowerWorld - s/t (Only because it's lesser known.)
And I want to second Metallica's Ride the Lightning.

Sepultura are a progenitor of nu and core.  Their cover of "Orgasmatron" is pretty good, though.

Maybe their new stuff, but I challenge you to name one thing nu or core about Beneath the Remains.

Agreed. Although the majority of Sepultura's material is horrible, their early output is too feral and great to ignore.
