I'm kinda new to the whole extreme metal kind of thing, so what are some good death metal and black metal bands?  I already know Children of Bodom (I think they're death metal at least), Dying Fetus, Primordial (I think they're black metal . . . I'm such a noob) and Cannibal Corpse.  Though I don't want to support an arsonist or band with members who have an extensive criminal record, so out goes about half the Norwegian bands . . . But seriously, what is some good stuff

I don't know if you were joking about what you said in the opening post, but if you avoid bands you disagree with (or based on their criminal records ) you will be missing out on a lot of good music. Particularly within metal. I don't know your age, but obviously if something makes you feel really uncomfortable, don't force it, think about what really matters to you in music. I doubt I'd easily get into NSBM bands back when I first got into metal, because I didn't know clearly what I was after in music. Now I enjoy quite a few such bands and it doesn't bother me at all. If you're serious about your newfound interest in metal, you'll be developing your ears and tastes as well as your ideas slowly over time. Read the editorials, check through reviews (you can sort by genre, if you didn't know), find a reviewer you trust and like, and go from there. I'd recommend checking out pioneer bands of the different subgenres, to get a certain idea about their history and development.
