The year is not over yet but a living list of the "best" Metal of 2011 is well over due. Feel free to make changes if you add something new or promote or demote a release.

Cool. Symphony X #1 spot 2 for 2, so far. Interesting to see if they make that spot from others here. I still haven't heard some stuff you have on your list, most notably (Brainstorm and Iced Earth). Going to try and do some catch up before the end of the month.

Nothing was going to top Iconoclast for me. Iced Earth surprised me with Dystopia. Minus the two terrible power ballads, it's a fast, furious and aggressive album.

Pretty good suggestions so far, there is a lot of time left this year so my list isn't finalized yet. Here are the albums i liked the most as of today and in no specific order. The list will obviously change before the end of the year.

Haven't heard a shitload of stuff, but this is what I got...

2. Edguy - Age of the Joker
3. Hell - Human Remains
4. While Heaven Wept - Fear of Infinity
The rest I do not have an order for yet, and want to hear more albums before I really order them...

Bloodbound - Unholy Cross
Wolf - Legions of Bastards
Riot - Immortal Soul
Disma - Towards the Megalith
Cannabis Corpse - Beneath Grow Lights Thou Shalt Rise
Satan's Host - By the Hands of the Devil
Arch/Matheos - Sympathetic Resonance
Hibria - Blind Ride
Eden's Curse - Trinity
Manilla Road - Playground of the Damned (digging the rocking, simple grooves of this one, even if it isn't one of their all time best)

Disappointments:
Anubis Gate - s/t - cool stuff, but compared to the last two? Not quite on the same level.
Symfonia - In Paradisum - Any hope I had for Tolkki is more or less gone now...maybe one or two good songs but mostly crap.

. What exactly don't you like about it?

Mostly Russ Allen's rougher vocal style and the "groovy" riff style.  I really love the earlier Symphony X stuff with galloping riffs and soaring vocals, but these last two albums really lack that.  Not bad albums, but I definitely prefer their earlier albums.

My favorite album so far this year is the Arch/Matheos. Symphony X comes in at a very close second. I didn't think Iconoclast would be topped, but listening to Sympathetic Resonance gives me pure joy. I would also throw Hell, Iced Earth, and Within Temptation on the list as well.
