Robert E. Howard's Influence On Heavy Metal Lyrics
« on: September 04, 2011, 11:04:21 PM »

Here is the link to an article I wrote on Robert E. Howard's influence on lyrics in heavy metal. I originally wrote this for a speculative fiction website where there were some problems regarding the layout that I wanted,so I pulled it.

http://www.echoesofcromrecords.com/Sword___Sorcery_In_Heavy_Metal_Music_.html

Fixed.

Maybe it's just my internet, but you're link isn't working.

Anyways, I find that Robert E. Howard's influence was massive. After all, the only reason I know that he exists is because I've read about lyrics being influenced by him!

Awesome article.  You could add:

Wishdoom - Helepolis (2011) featuring Cimmerian Plains - Son of Crom
Manilla Road - Playground of the Damned (2011) featuring Fire of Asshurbanipal
Solstice - New Dark Age (1998) featuring Cimmerian Codex
Keen of the Crow - Hyborea (2007)
Atlantean Kodex - The Golden Bough (2010) featuring The Atlantean Kodex
DoomSword - My Name Will Live On (2007) featuring Days of High Adventure
The Sword - Gods of the Earth (2008) featuring The Frost Giant's Daughter

I really like songs based on REH's works, particularly Conan.  How's the new album coming along, Howie?

Hey Sirliftsalot48 ! I will check those bands out. I was pretty specific with that article, in that I did not list bands like Atlantean Kodex(though, they are a very good band) because I reviewed their lyrics and there is nothing that directly refers to Howard's stories. The inspiration may have been there in spirit, and they may acknowledge Howard as an influence in interviews, but there is nothing there about his actual writings--sort of like Manowar.

Can't count Keen of the Crow because that album is about the Conan movie, now Howard's actual works.  Awesome album though.

Hey,sorry I only answered part of your post. There is a Cauldron Born EP about half-way recorded. I was recording the album at Corbin King's studio, but he has so much on his plate right now that we aren't going to be able to finish with him. I am waiting on my files from him, as well as word from Iron On Iron that they are still going to pay off the recording bill. I have another studio lined up.

In the downtime,Phil and I have started working on material for a new Briton Rites album.

Awesome article, the metal historian in me is pleased.   naughty

On nit to pick: Howard's grave is actually in Brownwood, TX.  It's about a half-hour down the road from his home on Cross Plains.

Hey Sargon, thanks for bringing that to my attention. Will fix it tomorrow. Look what Alex( former Blacksword guitar player) said:

<LunticAsylum> Sargon is truly the terrible - he may punch an average guy to 3 miles!
<LunticAsylum> hahahah

That's true.  I was iffy about that, but since it was about REH influence I included it.  It's kind of two degrees away.  It draws inspiration from a movie that drew inspiration from REH.

I forget to mention Antarctic Dream by Dexter Ward.  They are releasing a full length this year.  I'm really excited for that.  It's a few of the guys from Battleroar, so you know it's going to be good.

 laugh to what Alex said.

I think that the Howard influence by way of the original movie just might qualify. I will put all of these suggestions in a file and check them out when I have time to revise the article.

I don't doubt what Dexter Ward will probably feature some Howard references. Marco(vocalist) and I have been friends for a long time, but we haven't been in contact much in recent years. We used to talk about working together on a project of his called HYRKANIAN BLADES, but it never happened. I think that he ended up using a handful of those songs he had written for that in Battleroar, back when he used to sing with them.

Thanks for reading it guys. I am glad you enjoyed it. I wish I had more time to dabble in writing that kind of stuff, but making music consumes all of my time.
