I think Bin Laden will pass on History as a big failure. He had charisma, intelligence, education and resources. He could have made Islam cool. Instead, he chose the path of violence to avoid Western interference ('Crusades')  in Muslim 'land'. However, because of his terrorist attacks Western interference is far greater than it was.

(The image of) Osama was the darling of the West during the 80s - a bearded, turbaned young man fighting against the wrath of the 'godless' Reds with his small arms and what not. The thing about Osama is that he knew that there was a problem and the whole world agrees with him on that - the despotic tyrants in the Middle-East have to go. How he tried to oust them was through terrorism, violence and the promise of a new form of Shariah tyranny. The people of the Middle-East have now started driving out their oppressors not through Shariah and terrorism but through popular democratic uprisings.
