Question about Canadian Postage Rates
« on: October 15, 2006, 10:45:46 PM »

I have been researching postage rates so that I can thin out the crap in my music collection.
Living in Canada I would assume that it would be cheaper to ship a parcel within Canada (or at least within the same province) than it would be to ship a parcel to the US.  Using the postage rate calculator on Canada Post's website has so far proven me wrong in this regard.
Is anyone experienced in shipping from/within Canada and have any idea how much it really costs to ship a single cd with jewel case?
The info that I'm using is a 150 gram package, dimensions of 24 x 18 x 3cm.  The rates that I have found is from $8 Can to $14 Can (depending on the destination).  From Ottawa to anywhere in the US is $5.95 Can.

Fuck the rate calculator.  Go to the post office and have the package weighed and measured.  That's higher than I pay.  And it's always been cheaper to ship within Canada that to the US (or elsewhere.)  If you're just mailing one CD, and maybe even two, it'll go out as letter-mail rate rather than parcel, which is much cheaper.  Unless you put it in a box rather than a padded enveloped, of course.

1 CD: This should be sent as a letter (O/S [oversized] perhaps, I know they do this to US/World nowadays) and the weight for one cd in a bubblemailer fluctuates between about 90g and 120g depending. If it is 90g you will pay around $1-$1.50 if between 100g-200g it will be around $2.00.

2CDs: This will go as regular parcel or if you're sending to a province nearby you can ship Xpresspost and it will be between $6.50-7.50, but could be less.

Of course XpressPost will get it to its destination within one or two days, while regular mail will take a few days.
